MSSC takes a realistic and supportive "all-hazards" approach to emergency management in schools. Our staff have personal experience as school administrators, police officers, crisis counselors, teachers and national consultants. For online tools from our center see our MSSC Emergency Management for Schools Resources Page.
Our organization has been working on school safety issues since 1999. Since 2004, we have participated in numerous U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS)and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) focus groups to provide input on the creation of standardized training materials for Readiness and Emergency Management in Schools (REMS) grantees; in the creation of FEMA's self-study course: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ISC) for Schools; and in the integration of ICS into non-governmental agencies. Partnership has also occurred with colleagues at the county and state level within Montana Disaster and Emergency Services.
How may we help you?
Our trainings and consultations are rooted in the four-part emergency management cycle (Prevention/Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, Recovery) and are customized to address the needs of rural, urban, and reservation schools. Overview or specific topic trainings are available for the entire school staff and/or community groups. We also work in detail with schools as they establish or strengthen their district and building level emergency management teams.
Some of our training offerings include:
- School hazard/vulnerability assessments (1/2 to multi-day)
- The Emergency Management Cycle in schools (1 to 12 hrs)

What do MSSC trainings and consultations cost?
MSSC is entirely funded through grants and consultation fees. Our rates are negotiable based on the needs and resources of the school as well as appropriate travel costs. In most cases, we are able to partner with schools through existing grants (often with cost-sharing) or in future grant seeking.
No Montana school has been denied requested MSSC service due to funding limitations. Let's discuss how we may assist you and your school community.
